So how much should you drink a day?
For a general guide to how many ounces of water you should be drinking daily, divide your body weight by 2.
For the coffee, caffeinated tea, and alcohol drinkers- These beverages are a diuretic and need to be replaced with water.
Lets put it all together for ya, should we?
If you weigh 150lbs and divide that by 2, you should be drinking 75 ounces of water daily. HOWEVER, if you drink 8oz of coffee in the am’s and 4oz of wine in the pm’s, you need to account for them by drinking that much more water. Now you would need to drink 87 oz that day (I just added the 75 you should be drinking daily, plus + 12 oz extra to compensate for the good stuff- THE COFFEE ☕ & WINE 🍷).
Let’s dive into some ways to drink up!
Just drink it (that’s how I do it)!
Start the morning with a large glass of water, 10-15oz. (I put lemon 🍋 in mine for flavor and electrolytes. Your body will thank you, and you’ll knock out a large portion from the get go.
Drink soda ‘sparkling’ water. Yes it hydrates just the same! Lucky us! Many brands sweeten their soda water with juice or fruit. This may sound healthy, but it can have the same amount of sugar as soda pop. Unlike soda pop, soda water does not have phosphoric acid, so no need to worry about the enamel on your pearly whites :)
If you are a big soda drinker and need a replacement, mix unflavored soda water with splash of your favorite 100% fruit juice. You may need more than a splash in the beginning, but over time you should be able to keep it at a splash.
Add fruit! I’ve been known to muddle fresh berries 🍓 with basil 🍃 and lemon in the bottom of my glass before adding soda water. I’ve also used grapefruits, oranges, mint and lavender. The sky is the limit here people! But if you don’t have time for all that jazz, try a simple lemon or lime slice.
Remember that some foods hydrate too! Yes, many foods can be just as hydrating as water!
Fruits and veggies such as watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, grapefruit, peaches, plums, pears, berries, oranges, spinach, celery, green peppers, lettuce, cucumber, zucchini, tomato, cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage contain between 85-92% water!
Milk, yogurt, soup and bone broth are also rich in water.
Herbal teas count too!
Tips
Set an alarm that goes off every 15 minutes to remind you to gulp some down.
Only order water at restaurants (your body and your wallet will thank you).
