Itchy Acne? Fungal Acne May Be To Blame

If your acne ITCHES you more than likely have Malassezia Folliculitis (Fungal Acne).

This type of “acne” typically shows up on the forehead, outer checks or on the body.

I say “acne” in quotations because it’s actually not acne at all. Fungal "acne" is caused by a yeast overgrowth in the hair follicle.

Fungal Acne presents itself as tiny skin colored bumps, reddish bumps, and/or bumps that look like whiteheads.

This doesn’t mean that you don’t also have acne, acne. I often see cases where they co-exist😥 .

Malassezia loves warm, humid environments, so you may experience flare-ups while in warmer climates and during the summer months.

👉 The worst thing you can do for fungal acne is use topical oils. Malassezia yeast feeds on oil and can make fungal acne worse.

👉 The second worst thing you can do is take antibiotics, topically or internally. Antibiotics kill beneficial bacteria that prevent yeast overgrowth.

Steps to Clear Fungal Acne:

  1. Stop using oil on your face, whether you are using the oil cleansing method to wash your face, using jojoba/argan or another oil to moisturize, or simply using a moisturizer that has an oil listed in the ingredient list.

  2. Keep the pH of your skin balanced

  3. Use an antifungal product

  4. The root cause typically stems from an imbalance in the gut. Supporting your gut microbiome is a must.
