Skin Care Tips for Cystic Acne

One of my my many hormonal symptoms was cystic acne. I remember a few years back when I got my hands on an acne miracle cream from Lacura---> stay with me before you dart over to their website, credit card a'blazin' ... it was no "miracle". I used to have a massive collection of these so called 'miracle creams'.

Buying them was like playing the lotto. One of them had to be a winner... right? Wrong! You see, there is no such thing as a miracle cream.

Yes, it is true that some creams can...

  • calm inflammation and redness

  • dry out surface sebum

  • give the skin a tightening sensation and look

But have you ever stopped to think... "Are these things really going to get rid of my acne long-term?" Skin care companies are in the business of making money. If your acne went away, who would they sell to? This also applies to many supplement companies who promise clear skin, thicker hair, weight loss, regular cycles, etc. Now I'm not saying that every company has a hidden agenda to just make money... but I am willing to bet a handful of them do. So, to help you cut through all the noise, I created some guidelines to help you select skin care products. Do not purchase a product if...

  • It lists fragrance (natural or synthetic), parfum or essential oils. These chemicals alter your skins pH and microbiome. They can also cause irritation and damage to your moisture barrier. ALWAYS BUY FRAGRANCE FREE.

  • If the product contains sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). SLS is a cleansing agent that is too harsh for your facial skin. I also recommend avoiding Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). It is less harsh than SLS, but there are better options out there.

  • Stay away from exfoliating scrubs. St. Ives Apricot Scrub, I'M TALKING TO YOU . (This cult favorite used to be in my shower for years!). These exfoliating products use walnut shells, coffee granules, sugar, etc. as exfoliating ingredients. The jagged edges of these ingredients cause micro-tears in the skin and can lead to long-term skin damage.

Do not repurchase a product if...

  • Your skin feels tight or uncomfortable after use

  • The product creates a lot of foam

  • The product dries out your skin. Drying out the skin will not clear acne long-term, it will only damage the moisture barrier.

Now it is time to head to your bathroom for a little inspection.
